book review policies

General Information
I'm a US-based blogger who is currently accepting Adult and Young Adult fiction for review. You can contact me about reviewing your book via my contact page or at thisdarkmaterial@gmail.com.

I accept physical ARCs and finished copies. If the book is part of a series then I may request any previously published entries if I have not already read them. I am not accepting e-ARCs, audiobooks, or independently/self-published books for review at this time. Review requests for these formats will not receive a reply. I will make exceptions for those on my to-read bookshelf.

UPDATED 3/2019: Review slots are filled through July 31, 2019.

Genres
If your book is on my to-read bookshelf then I would already like to read it, regardless of how it fits into the genres listed below. You may also peruse my read bookshelf to get a feel for my interests.
I have a broad range of interests in both the fiction and non-fiction genres, however, there are some books which I am NOT accepting for review at this time:
  • Romance
  • Middle grade YA
  • Memoir/modern biographies
  • “Hot button” socio-political issues
  • Poetry
  • Short story collections

Accepting Books
Accepting a book for review does not always guarantee a review. I make every effort to review each book that I finish in a timely fashion, and with release dates in mind, although I cannot guarantee it. To best ensure a review is posted in time for your book’s release, I prefer to receive a book 2-3 months prior to that date.

Reviews
All reviews are cross-posted to Twitter, Goodreads, and Amazon. I receive no compensation for my reviews and they are all my own, honest opinions. I write fair and honest reviews, which does not always mean that my reviews will be positive. However, if I did not enjoy a book I will explain clearly and specifically what it was that I did not like.

Review Structure
Each review will include the following:
  • Cover art
  • Book info (title, author, publisher, page count, release date)
  • "Add to Shelf" Goodreads link
  • Where or how I received the book
  • My review (plot overview + opinion)
  • Rating
My reviews average 500-750 words in length, excluding the publisher summary and book info. I use the same five star review system featured on Goodreads. One and five star reviews are both rare; a book must be exceptionally good (or bad) to earn either extreme. Half-star ratings may be given as well.

Book Rating Key
  • ★ = Books with this rating are so bad they’re…just bad. If I did not finish the book I will note where I stopped reading, why I stopped, and if I may ever return to finish it.
  • ★★ = The book may have some redeeming characteristics, but they are overwhelmed by poor plotting, prose, or characterization.
  • ★★★ = An average book. There were either several issues with the writing, or else it wasn’t a subject/story I’m particularly interested in. Books with this rating may be more appreciated by readers with different tastes than mine.
  • ★★★★ = An excellent book that I would go out of my way to recommend. There may be some minor flaws, but they don’t detract from the story as a whole.
  • ★★★★★ = A new favorite book and one of the best I’ve read. All aspects combined to make a practically flawless story.
